How Tixel Works

TIXEL i (Dry Eye / MGD)

TIXEL i is an FDA-cleared treatment for evaporative dry eye due to meibomian gland dysfunction (MGD). This treatment uses controlled thermal energy and gentle pressure to soften inspissated meibum and support healthier gland function. By enhancing the quality and flow of eyelid oils, TIXEL i helps stabilize the tear film and reduce friction on the ocular surface.

Best for patients with:

• Patients with MGD causing evaporative dry eye
• Thick, blocked, or poor-quality meibum
• Eyelid inflammation and gland blockage
• Infestation of Demodex mites causing oil to be thick
• Persistent irritation despite home heat/expressions, masks, and drops

 

What to expect

• Tixel i is safe for all skin types all year round
• Three treatments 2 weeks apart (timing is critical to interrupt the life and reproduction cycle of the Demodex mites)
• No numbing drops or gel needed
• Arrive without makeup or sunscreen

 

TIXEL 2 (Periocular skin rejuvenation)

TIXEL 2 is the next-generation thermal fractional system used to improve periocular skin texture and fine lines by stimulating the skin’s natural renewal response—without laser energy. TIXEL 2 delivers longer-duration thermal contact to the lower lid and upper lid hooding to improve both function and appearance.
Because this deeper thermal application affects collagen in the skin, patients receive enhanced remodeling results. For comfort, we apply a 30-minute topical numbing protocol before treatment.

By tightening lax lower eyelid skin and reducing upper lid hooding, TIXEL 2 can improve blink dynamics. A more complete blink enhances natural meibomian oil expression — supporting improved tear stability and comfort in addition to superior cosmetic outcomes.

What to Expect

During Treatment: Tixel sessions are performed in our office. Most patients feel warmth and light pressure; discomfort is mild and brief. We use comfort measures and topical anesthetic when needed.

 

Downtime:

• TIXEL i: Minimal to no downtime
• TIXEL 2: Limited downtime — mild redness and swelling common for 24–72 hours

Results That Improve Over Time:

Because Tixel stimulates collagen remodeling and gland function at a cellular level, improvements often continue for weeks to months after treatment. With proper eyelid care and maintenance, results can be long-lasting

Most patients describe a warm sensation. Discomfort is brief, and for deeper treatments like TIXEL 2 we numb the area for comfort.

How many treatments are needed?

A customized series is usually recommended for optimal results — typically at least 3 sessions, spaced several weeks apart based on your exam.

Is this replacing IPL or LipiFlow?

Tixel is complementary. It targets tissue differently — improving eyelid and periocular skin quality supporting gland function. We will tailor the best combination for your dry eye needs.
