At Dry Eye Equation, we use an advanced LLLT system from Optometric Aesthetics that allows us to deliver multiple wavelengths of light at the same time, with precise control over the intensity of each wavelength.
Why our LLLT is different
Rather than cycling through colors, we deliver red, blue, yellow, and infrared light simultaneously.
Imagine rows of red, blue, yellow, and infrared LED bulbs placed side-by-side, repeated across the treatment panel. Each wavelength is present at the same time, and we independently adjust the intensity of each color based on your specific condition.
- Four wavelengths at the same time
- Independent control of each wavelength’s intensity
- Customization based on inflammation level, gland health, skin sensitivity, and treatment goals
This flexibility allows us to tailor treatment more precisely and treat multiple contributors to dry eye in a single session— especially for complex or chronic dry eye cases.
The benefits of each light wavelength
Red Light
- Supports cellular energy production (ATP)
- Helps reduce inflammation
- Promotes tissue repair and healing
- Commonly used to support meibomian gland health
The benefits of each light wavelength
Blue Light
- Has antibacterial properties
- Helps reduce eyelid margin bacterial load
- Useful for blepharitis and other inflammatory eyelid conditions
- Helpful for acne and acne rosacea
The benefits of each light wavelength
Yellow Light
- Calms sensitive or reactive skin
- Helps reduce redness and irritation
- Supports lymphatic drainage and tissue balance
- Often helpful for rosacea-associated dry eye as well as allergy –associated dry eye
The benefits of each light wavelength
Infrared Light
- Penetrates deeper into tissue
- Enhances circulation and cellular regeneration
- Supports deeper gland and periocular tissue health
- Amplifies the effects of other wavelengths
What to expect during treatment
- Performed comfortably in-office
- Treatment is gentle, relaxing, and painless
- Sessions typically last 15 minutes
- No downtime — you may return to normal activities immediately
LLLT is often used as a supportive or maintenance therapy and is frequently combined with IPL, Tixel, or gland expression treatments for optimal results.
How LLLT helps dry eye
LLLT works at the cellular level to:
- Reduce chronic eyelid and ocular surface inflammation
- Support healthier meibomian gland function over time
- Improve oil quality and tear film stability
- Enhance comfort without adding heat or mechanical pressure
LLLT FAQs
Is this the same strength as at-home LED masks?
No — and this is an important distinction.
In-office LLLT devices deliver significantly higher and more therapeutic energy levels than at-home LED masks. Consumer devices are intentionally designed to be low-power for safety and general wellness. Our system delivers medical-grade, calibrated energy capable of producing measurable biological effects.
At-home devices may feel similar, but they do not deliver the same intensity, consistency, or depth of effect.
Can higher intensity cause damage?
No. LLLT works through photobiomodulation, not heat or tissue injury. Even at higher therapeutic intensities, the goal is to stimulate cellular activity — not to burn or damage tissue. Treatments remain comfortable and safe when delivered appropriately.
How many treatments are needed?
LLLT is typically performed as a series or 2 per week for 3 weeks, followed by maintenance as needed. The number and frequency depend on:
- Severity of dry eye
- Degree of inflammation
- Whether LLLT is used alone or alongside other treatments
Why would LLLT be recommended if I’m already doing IPL or Tixel?
LLLT complements other therapies by:
- Calming inflammation between treatments
- Supporting cellular repair and gland health
- Providing a gentle option for sensitive patients
- Helping maintain results long-term
It is often part of a layered, comprehensive dry eye strategy.
By doing LLLT immediately following Tixel 2, the post procedure inflammation is nearly eliminated.
Is LLLT right for you?
LLLT may be especially helpful if you have:
- Chronic inflammatory dry eye
- Meibomian gland dysfunction
- Blepharitis or eyelid irritation
- Sensitivity to heat-based treatments
- A need for maintenance-focused therapy
A Dry Eye Evaluation allows us to determine whether LLLT should be part of your personalized plan.
